The Canadian singer-producer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2012\/apr\/28\/grimes-visions-montreal\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spent three weeks barricaded in a room by herself<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in order to meet the deadline for her first major-label album. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Visions<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was the finished product, and she became famous very quickly from it, only to deal with industry figures trying to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spin.com\/2012\/12\/grimes-interview-2012-big-year\/2\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">muddy her creative vision<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> once she became successful. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since then, she has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rocnation.com\/grimes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">signed with Roc Nation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Jay-Z\u2019s entertainment management company. Earlier this year, she announced her relationship with Elon Musk by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/media.vanityfair.com\/photos\/5af1bc232630df71e062335d\/master\/w_768,c_limit\/l-Musk-Grimes-Tesla.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">appearing with him at the Met Gala<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wearing a Tesla choker. Even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=eRl5wi8JCnA\" data-rel=\"lightbox-video-0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apple recently tapped her music<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a marketing tool for selling Mac computers. With all this corporate support and attention from the elite, she isn\u2019t quite the underdog she used to be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grimes\u2019 new single <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gYG_4vJ4qNA\" data-rel=\"lightbox-video-1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe Appreciate Power,\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> featuring HANA, follows on the heels of her rising status as Silicon Valley\u2019s Pop Star of Choice. The song is \u201cinspired by the North Korean band <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/5103724\/north-korea-moranbong-band-winter-olympics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moranbong<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d and it\u2019s \u201cwritten from the perspective of a Pro-A.I. Girl Group Propaganda Machine,\u201d according to the track\u2019s press release. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The song is preternaturally poppy. It almost sounds like it could be on Top 40 radio, save for the little details that separate Grimes from other mainstream producers. That is to say, she embraces the abrasive: terrified shrieks and out-of-tune horns puncture the production\u2019s robotic sheen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And actually, the song does have the cadence of a cult chant. Coupled with the industrial churn of guitar, \u201cWe Appreciate Power\u201d is particularly effective as an exercise in using dystopian fantasy to shock listeners. Grimes\u2019 aesthetic often comes off like apocalyptic cyberpunk cosplay, but in this soundscape, the Artificial Intelligence Revolution sounds less like pretend and more like an inevitability. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps Musk put her up to this, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/music\/artists\/elon-musk-behind-girlfriend-grimess-ai-loving-new-single\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some will say<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. After all, the engineer is known for, among other things, founding OpenAI, a company that aims to regulate A.I. research, and promote research that accounts for the risk of an unfriendly robotic super-intelligence developing in the future. Maybe the single was Musk\u2019s idea of a PSA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But this song, along with the accompanying lyric video (below), feels like Grimes\u2019 singular vision, and her vision of the future is much more grim. As an artist, she is allowed the liberty of visiting the dark corners her significant other wishes to avoid. In the video, she and HANA appear in catsuits, displayed like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mass Effect<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> characters, inanimate and compliant against a planetary backdrop. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Grimes - We Appreciate Power (Lyric Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gYG_4vJ4qNA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Grimes\u2019 welcoming of the robot empire with open arms surprises you, well, it shouldn\u2019t. As she has fraternized with business moguls, defended the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/entertainment\/archive\/2018\/08\/grimes-elon-musk-celebrity-relationships\/566474\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">questionable ethics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of her billionaire boyfriend and dropped the \u201cAnti-Imperialist\u201d label from her Twitter profile, her music has shifted focus. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No longer does she draw strength from the emotional vulnerability of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=JtH68PJIQLE\" data-rel=\"lightbox-video-2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOblivion\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Tv9YoYCKNoE\" data-rel=\"lightbox-video-3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFlesh Without Blood.\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Judging from this single, her new stuff revels in the sheer dominance of the \u00a0inhuman. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grimes has shown the music industry that she can create a future of human subservience to machines, and people will visit just because it is hers.
